Jeanette is the founder of the Waltjapiti Arts organisation which was established in 1995.
She originally was from a teaching background for 25yrs and co-ordinate events for educational
facilities. She is from the Wambaya people, North East of Tennant Creek, Northern Territory
Australia. She also had traditional links to the Bundjalung and Yuggera people. Through her
teaching years she became very aware of how Indigenous people have a different learning style,
which is more hands on and creative. This motivated her research into her own culture and how
education could be improved for the youth of today.
After some years, which she still continues today, she developed a music, arts and dance program
that attempts at encouraging Aboriginal people to value their life skills and use them as a
positive foundation to build onto goals for their future. As it was difficult to convince the
mainstream education system of these learning differences she developed a program that included
music, art and dance which was the establishment of Waltjapiti Arts.
Her business has been operating for 10years, in this time her role has been multi faceted such
as the development and delivery of educational programs, the research and development of tourism
projects, the organisation and co-ordination of performing arts events and consulting in matters
of Indigenous Affairs to government ministers. Her role in attracting funding, business management
and marketing were also a legacy that has been left with the existing association. She also founded
Waltjapiti Inc.- Wambaya Indigenous Training Program a centre that offers programs for Aboriginal
school leavers and adults to attend, so as to receive a formal certificate of accreditation for
their chosen career pathways to promote a better future for Indigenous people.
Recently has her health has failed her so she works on some projects with consulting, some program
development and artistic direction for performing arts projects. Her passion has always been about
family, culture and education which she attempts to integrate into her ongoing projects. Her
productions and as her script writing is being refined and artistic creativity has matured there
could be huge possibilities in the area of film production for the future.
The new organisation that has developed from Waltjapiti Arts is now known as Imbala Jarjum who
are the original performers and most of them her children. She has passed onto them a wealth of
knowledge and now security in the operation of their own business. She acts as one of the
consultants for Imbala Jarjum and assists in the marketing and organising of ongoing events.
